News: Burnt Tapes Release A Brand New Cover

Our good friends in Burnt Tapes have just released a brand new cover song for us all to enjoy! The guys have been down to The Ranch with Daly George to record a cover of the Loverboys classic Working For The Weekend. Singer and guitarist Phil said "we were asked by Californian label Cleopatra Records to cover an 80s track as part of a comp that is coming out later this year. This track resonated the most because 'everybody's working for the weekend and everybody needs little romance' am I right people. Everybody needs some digital romance in the time of Corona!"

The band are working hard on their second LP that they hope to release later this year and they've also just released their first beanies that you can buy on their Bandcamp page now!

News: CPRW Premiere Our Souls’ New Video for Beer Bullet

Our Souls are set to release their second EP, I've Made A Terrible Mistake, on November 1st. We're very excited to present the premiere of their video for the song Beer Bullet, which can be found on the EP. I first fell in love with Our Souls when I reviewed their debut EP, I Might Drink Myself To Death, and I can't wait to hear I've Made A Terrible Mistake.

Check out Our Souls on Facebook and Bandcamp to keep up to date with the band and listen to their fantastic music – including I've Made A Terrible Mistake on November 1st.

News: Do It Together Fest Announce First Wave Of Bands

It's with great pleasure that we at CPRW get to announce the first eight bands playing Do It Together Fest 2020. The two day festival, which takes place on the 24th and 25th of January at the New Cross Inn in South London, is a celebration of the UK's DIY punk rock community. The fine folk from Be Sharp Promotions, Shout Louder and CPRW have been working hard on putting together a line up of some of our favourite bands from around the UK – not only to celebrate the goodness that is the UK's DIY punk scene but also to celebrate our (Paul, Sarah and Colin’s) birthdays.

Call Me Malcolm
It would be criminal to throw a party at the New Cross Inn and not invite Call Me Malcolm. These ska punks exemplify what the South London punk and ska scene is all about: love, empathy and looking after each other. By now you've probably seen Call Me Malcolm live, so you know what a special occasion it is, particularly when they play their home venue.
https://callmemalcolm.bandcamp.com/

Eat Defeat
By the time Do It Together Fest rolls around, Eat Defeat will be fresh from conquering America, following a tour and an appearance at The Fest. The Leeds based quartet's uplifting brand of pop punk never fails to win a crowd over; they pick up fans wherever they play. Never a band to miss. Ask Summers nicely and he might pop out and play some Pokemon Go with you between bands.
https://eatdefeat.bandcamp.com/

Forever Unclean
Coming all the way from Denmark, Forever Unclean are already a big part of the UK DIY punk scene. The band's fresh take on indie punk rock has been delighting crowds around the UK for a few years now, and I for one was really excited when they were confirmed for Do It Together Fest. If you don't know them yet you're in for a treat.
https://foreverunclean.bandcamp.com/

Just Say Nay
Just Say Nay have just released the ska punk album of the year in Maximum Effort. That's reason enough to go and see them. The nine piece have been steadily building a name for themselves as one of the best up and coming ska bands in the country and Maximum Effort solidifies that reputation. It's also pretty entertaining watching them all squeeze onto a stage.
https://justsaynay.bandcamp.com/

Katie MF
If you're a regular reader of CPRW you probably know how much I love Katie MF. One of my biggest musical highlights of the last couple of years is watching the three piece wow crowds no matter the size. This is powerful, emotional, sing-along anti-folk punk at its finest. Prepare to be moved.
https://katiemf.bandcamp.com/music

Toodles & The Hectic Pity
Bristol's Toodles & The Hectic Pity released one of mine and Sarah Shout Louder's favourite EPs of 2017 in Call In Sick. Sadly neither of us have been able to see them full band before, so we decided Do It Together Fest was the perfect excuse to remedy that. Playing pop-tinged folk punk, I have no doubt that Toodles are going to leave New Cross with a lot of new pals.
https://toodlesandthehecticpity.bandcamp.com/

Triple Sundae
2019 was a big year for melodic pop punks Triple Sundae. It saw the release of the phenomenal Glow, a UK tour with The Jukebox Romantics and a tour of Canada. I'm predicting 2020 is going to be even bigger for the band, kicking things off with a performance at Do It Together Fest. These guys continue to get better and better, don't sleep on them.
https://triplesundae.bandcamp.com/

Uniforms
Coming down from Dundee are Uniforms. Legends of the Scottish punk scene, this will be a very rare London appearance. Playing energetic gruff punk rock, these guys are one of my favourite live bands – blowing me away whenever I see them. Last year they released the excellent Reasons To Breathe EP, and word on the street is they've been hard at work on a debut LP. That's very exciting.
https://uniforms.bandcamp.com/

We've still got some more bands, including some fantastic headliners, to announce.

Alongside some great bands, there will also be a record and zine fair to check out. Shout Louder will also be making a special zine for the event with all the proceeds being donated to Mind.

Weekend Tickets for Do It Together Fest are £20 (£23 with zine) and can be purchased here: https://newcrossinn.com/tickets/events/do-it-together-fest

News: Dead Bars Have A Brand New Album On The Way!

In 2017 Seattle punk rockers Dead Bars' album Dream Gig was my album of the year. It was superb. I am thrilled to find out that the band are back with their follow up titled Regulars. Regulars will be released on the 3rd of May through All In Vinyl (UK), A-F Records (North America), Eager Beaver Records (Japan) and No Reason Records (Italy).

Here's what the band have to say about Regulars.

"I like this idea of being a regular. There are moments of highs and lows; loneliness and community, sadness and celebration. That's what it's like to be in a band. That's what it's like to be in Dead Bars." says vocalist/founder John Maiello

These ideas and contradictions that can be heard throughout the album, like on 'No Tattoos'. "All my friends have tattoos / But I don't have any tattoos. They wanna remember something / And I wanna forget everything," muses Maiello. Sure it's an easy-on-the-ear anthem, ripe for pit-friendly fun, but it's also indicative of the broader approach that underpins Dead Bars' song-writing. You can be part of the community - and you're welcomed into the Church of Dead Bars - but you're also an individual, and you can be different.

Formed in 2013, a song like 'No Tattoos' marks out just how different Dead Bars are, and how their path to this point has been anything but traditional. The brainchild of two East Coast drummers, John Maiello, and C.J. Frederick, who met, appropriately enough, in a Seattle bar. Since then, a succession of friends and session musicians have filled in, helping out when needed, until the current, steady, line-up of Maiello, Frederick, Jon Oddo and Elliot Thordarson solidified.

"It's always been a rotating cast of characters," says Maiello. "We kind of function like an actual bar. Sometimes people get tired, and they go home, or they get too fucked up and get kicked out."

Now a long-time Seattle resident, Maiello called on one of the city's icons to helm 'Regulars', hitting up the legendary Jack Endino (Nirvana, Mudhoney, Soundgarden) to oversee production duties. When Maiello first sent some songs over, Endino replied that "[They have] a good pop hook with a bunch of bashing and screaming over it; what's not to like?" This sound remains on 'Regulars', sticking fast and true to the classic Dead Bars songs like 'Emergency' and 'Earplug Girl'.

"I cold-called him because I figured if it worked for Nirvana then maybe it would work for us," says Maiello. "So we tracked all the music with him at Soundhouse in Seattle, and then I did vocals at Pierced Ears Recording with Aaron Schroeder (Wimps). It was mixed in Massachusetts by Jay Maas (Defeater, Ceremony)."

Yet, while 'Regulars' retains much of what makes Dead Bars so great, it is no mere repeat of past successes. Instead, it features the group's most ambitious songs to date - a consequence of more collaboration and a settled line-up. In turn, this has allowed for more of the group's classic influences to start informing the song writing - from the Beatles to Tom Petty and the Stooges.

"Everything was different, this time," says Maiello. "We jammed a lot more during the writing of this, so there's definitely more guitar stuff - and more vocal stuff - going on. Also, two of C.J.'s songs made it onto the album."

The result is 11 songs of heartfelt and passionate punk rock, which will appeal to anyone who has ever struggled to find their place in the world. 'Lucky' and 'Another Day' are pure garage-tinged pop-punk ragers that are built for sweaty bar-room call-and-responses, while 'You Never Left' and 'Rain' show the group's ability to mix the hopelessness and hopeful. 'Freaks', meanwhile, is a rallying call for the misunderstood, while 'Producto Toxico' - a song about going to an exotic place and doing the same thing you do at home - carries a relatable world-weariness.

Two years ago, Dead Bars' biggest preoccupation was playing their 'Dream Gig'. Now, as they examine the human condition, the stakes are raised. In the classic Replacements tune, 'Here Comes a Regular,' Paul Westerberg's cry that "Everybody wants to be special here," seems like the perfect mantra for 'Regulars' and its overarching themes of acceptance, loneliness, and community. Of course, we're all special and unique in our own way - but sometimes you need a band like Dead Bars to realize it.

South London juggernauts Mean Caesar have been tearing their way through the grimiest clubs and loudest bars South of the river since the start of 2018. Their debut EP, self-titled ‘Mean Caesar’, deals with London’s darker side and personal loss, attaining nosebleed-reaching dimensions. Asserting an amplified, technically informed, yet polish-free style, the band proves their punk mastery while retaining all of their raw, buzzed-out power.

Opening for the likes of Red City Radio, Apologies, I Have None and The Copyrights, vocalist Danny Lester, guitarists Oliver Ward and David Littlefair, bassist Stu Henson and drummer Stu Morrison have spent their time in the practice room studying the controlled power of their mentors. For the self-titled debut, their goal was to make the music “hooky as hell, with an urgency to it,” as frontman Lester says, and they tasked veteran post-hardcore engineer Joe Watson with helping them achieve a muscular bite. In typical fashion of their former bands, the music rejects any hints of pretention.

First single ‘South London Summer ‘epitomizes this; an insatiable sharpness of a track, about finding a gang where you feel at home. “I’m thankful every day that this bunch of misfits happened to cross my way / We’d prop up the Monty bar where talking endless shit can get you far / We’d toast our failures in the park and wonder reckless streets in the dark,” Lester croons on the rampageous track.

They are also hitting the road at the end of November and the beginning of December. Check out this press release from Little Rocket Records for all the details.

For almost a decade, Welsh punks Question The Mark have been touring the length and breadth of the UK & Europe, whilst putting out releases on several DIY labels in keeping with the bands ethics.

Mixing the traditional bearded punk of Hot Water Music/Leatherface/Banner Pilot with a healthy dose of rock’n’roll guitar pyrotechnics and distinctive Welsh cynicism, QTM are masters of their bleak yet buoyant craft.

This long awaited, and much anticipated new release follows the bands appearance at Fest 17 in Gainesville, Florida this October where Question The Mark played to a hugely receptive, packed out audience at the Foreign Bodies Showcase at Loosey’s on the last night of the festival, following two pre-fest shows in St. Petersburg and Tallahassee.

The band made a visit to Sunderland, UK, the home of Leatherface / Medictation to the infamous, Bunker and the source of all things Punk Rock within the North East of England.

Expecting a few drinks and a night out, they ended up with the following three tracks recorded with Graeme Philliskirk in the Little Rocket Studios. They enjoyed their time and wanted to remember it by putting their new EP out.

Get it here - https://qtmlrr.bandcamp.com/

To coincide with the release Question The Mark, have a full UK tour with Canadian Rifle and a video release for Nightmare on Misery Street.

The UK's very best ska punk festival is back for its third year next July and is looking bigger and better than ever! Check out this announcement video below.

Ska punk legends Buck-O-Nine and Voodoo Glow Skulls have just been announced as two of the headliners for the weekend. This will be Buck-O-Nine's first UK show since 2001 and the Voodoo Glow Skulls are still one of the very best live bands around - I was seriously impressed when I saw them at the Camden Underworld earlier this year.

Be sure to get your early bird ticket here as soon as possible as over 50% are already gone! You can keep up to date with the event here.

Level Up Festival is a three day ska punk festival put together by the minds behind Be Sharp Promotions, Fishlock Promotions and El Topo Bookings and takes place at the home of punk in London, the New Cross Inn from the 19th to the 21st of July. In the past two festivals bands such as Big D & The Kids Table, King Prawn, The Filaments, The JB Conspiracy, Lightyear, Random Hand and The Toasters have graced the stage. It's the best weekend you can have in London all year. Stop reading this and go and buy your ticket.

News: We Went Away And Loads Of Things Were Announced

So we've been having a lovely time in Japan and missed out on spreading some of the wonderful punk rock news that was announced whilst we were away, so here's a brief update in case you missed some things too.

First of all, this Saturday at the New Cross Inn the fourth instalment of Might As Well Fest is happening. The festival is put together by Disconnect Disconnect Records and Speaking Tongues and raises money for The Rainbow Trust. The Bar Stool Preachers are headlining the festival this year and are backed by a superb line-up of bands, featuring The Capitalist Kids, Thousand Oak, Aerial Salad, The Capital, Eat Dirt, Modern Shakes, Laserchrist and Tom Aylott. Get tickets here.

Next up is the news from Manchester Punk Festival. MPF is returning for its fifth year next year, Friday 19th to Sunday 21st of April, and is looking bigger and better than ever. Super early bird and early bird tickets sold out incredibly fast. I might be right in saying that both sets went before any bands were announced which is crazy! There are still some standard priced tickets available for £60. I can't imagine that these are going to be available for long though so don't sleep on getting your ticket. Speaking of exciting things happening in Manchester. Our buddy Sarah, creator of the excellent Shout Louder webzine, is throwing an all dayer in February to celebrate her 30th birthday. Taking place at Gullivers, it has a stacked line-up featuring Faintest Idea, Fair Do's, Nosebleed, PMX, Aerial Salad, The Human Project, The Burnt Tapes, Goodbye Blue Monday and Follow Your Dreams. A crazy line-up – buy your tickets here. Shout Louder has recently started an excellent series looking at mental health titled #Mentally Sound that is essential reading, do so here.

Finally, in some news that actually made me do a little jump of excitement in our hotel room in Japan,  Rehasher are doing a UK and Europe tour for the first time in November including a stop at the New Cross Inn in South London for Be Sharp Promotions. For those who don't know, Rehasher are the skate punk side project of Roger Lima, bassist and co-vocalist of ska punk legends Less Than Jake – and they are amazing. I was lucky enough to catch them live a few years ago in Florida and was flabbergasted by how good they were. I can't wait to see them again. And if that isn't exciting enough, UK pop punk heroes Eat Defeat will be on tour with them. Brilliant. Like Rehasher here to keep up to date with the tour.
